Our 202 Firecrest® Carbon Clincher is all about aiming higher. They took their classic 202 wheelset -- the legendary climber’s companion -- and transformed it into a stiff, lightweight and aerodynamic speed weapon ideal for every road you travel. That’s the power of Firecrest and Carbon Clincher technologies. At 1,395 g, the new 202 is the lightest entry in the Firecrest Carbon Clincher lineup. The Zipp® 202 Firecrest Carbon Clincher retains the classic 32 mm rim depth of its predecessor though, with the Firecrest profile, now has a wider 25.4 mm max rim width. The results redefine what’s possible with a do-it-all classic road wheel.

Zipp’s two most profound wheel innovations, the Firecrest rim shape and Carbon Clincher technology, form the foundation of the new 202 Firecrest Carbon Clincher. Firecrest rims have a near-constant width from brake track to spoke bed to improve aerodynamics and better control airflow. We used Computational Fluid Dynamics software analysis to maximize aerodynamics and minimize wind-produced torque, resulting in a 202 Firecrest Carbon Clincher that is faster and better handling than a classic road wheel. Our Firecrest rim shape improves stability by moving the wheel’s center of pressure to sit almost directly over the steering axis, where wind-produced steering torque has a minimal effect. 

Now, add to that Zipp's Carbon Clincher technology. Their exclusive resin, based on materials used in motorsports braking systems, effectively tolerates the incredible spikes in heat caused by braking to provide you with reliability and stopping power. Combine that with our Tangente Platinum brake pads and you have unmatched performance, all with the ease of use of a clincher.

88/188 HUBS

Starting in September 2013 all Firecrest Carbon Clincher and Tubular rim-brake wheelsets, as well as the 202 Tubular wheelset, will be built with the latest iteration of our 188 rear hub, the V9, and a more effective spoke-lacing pattern. The refinements result in improved torsional and lateral stiffness as well as improve durability.

Details of the 188/V9 hub:

• Bearings: Larger Swiss steel bearings with a custom cartridge increase durability by more evenly spreading load over the axle.
• Lacing: New “virtual 3 cross” lacing on both sides of rear wheel for improved stiffness, achieving 3 cross stiffness in a two cross pattern with a new spoke geometry.
• Stiffness: The 188/V9 has 25 percent more torsional stiffness than a leading competitive hub. This measure of stiffness is crucial for the direct power transfer to the rear wheel for out-of-the saddle sprints and climbs. The new hub also is laterally (side-to-side) stiffer than its rival or predecessor.
